The building that formerly housed Lincoln Fabrics in Port Dalhousie will be reborn as a mixed use apartment building after St. Catharines city council approved zoning for the development Monday.
The project on Lakeport Road at the entrance of Port Dalhousie will include 132 apartment units, 13 ground floor live and work units and 370 square metres of commercial space.
The development includes a two-story glass rooftop addition on the existing building and a cupola, along with a nine-storey expansion building.
Council voted 8-2 for the project, with Port Dalhousie councillors Carlos Garcia and Bruce Williamson the sole “no” votes. Both councillors said they were supportive of revitalizing the old Lincoln Fabrics building but could not support the expansion
Ten residents also addressed council about the project, with some raising concerns about traffic, parking, height and size and others calling for the plan to move ahead and give the area new life.
City staff recommended council approve an amendment to the zoning by-law for 61 and 63 Lakeport Road and a portion of publicly-owned lands known as 57A (59A) Lakeport Road to allow for the re-use and expansion of the existing building and to allow for an underground parking garage.
