Dandelion energy exec leads a brighter, sustainable future with geothermal technology

Once upon a time, computers were exclusive to big companies wherein complex calculations can make or break their game. Their size is colossal that its transportation and storage require a serious allocation of budget.

Fast forward today, most features of a computer workstation can fit in our pockets. The same with this technological advancement, the energy sector is also gearing up in providing cost-effective geothermal power in every household.

“Already air conditioners that are more efficient are putting enormous strain on the grid. Drives fuel use and transition challenges. The benefits of geothermal because of that connection to the ground is really moving out the demand peak,” Kathryn Hannun, Dandelion Dandelion Co-founder and President, said. “The technology has a lot of benefits that it confers to the grid and help it operate much better. Which is one reason why we’ve seen utilities in New York embrace this technology and really become its champion.”

The Dandelion Energy home geothermal system replaces your home’s existing air conditioning and heating equipment with a powerful heat pump and safe, underground pipes that move heat between the earth and your home.

This can save you $1,000s on heating & cooling every year as it is more efficient than a Central AC of approximately 30%. This is good news to those who are working from home or attending online classes as tech devices are power-hungry.

“If you can align the economic incentive with the environmental incentives, you have the opportunity for massive impact. That’s really what attracted me to geothermal heat pumps to begin with. My job [with Alphabet] was to look for opportunities to create businesses that would have a positive impact,” Hunnan shared in an interview.

Its benefits include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 7 tons per year, equivalent to removing almost two cars from the road each year. This is a solid solution to our ever-growing energy and resource consumption.

It such a big leap from being dependent to public utilities companies or less than a decade efficiency of independent solar power. The lifespan of the Dandelion Air is 20 years while ground loops is 50+ years.

Hannun is one of the recipients of the 9th Annual U.S Clean Energy Education & Empowerment (C3E) Awards on December 2020. This award recognizes women who are forerunners in clean energy initiatives. The U.S. C3E Initiative is led by the US Department of Energy (DOE) in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Energy Initiative, Stanford Energy, and the Texas A&M Energy Institute.
