Crash-tested peace-of-mind for transportation owners, road builders & the public

Durisol Ltd. announces the successful crash-test of the Aluminum noise wall product.

Today marks another proud safety achievement in the company’s history: the successful crash-test of the Durisol Aluminum noise barrier.

A MASH (Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware) TL-4 crash-tested structure-mounted noise barrier was first designed by the roadside safety experts at Safe Roads Engineering. A mock wall was then erected at the test site, and the crash test was completed on December 8, 2020, conducted by third-party provider, Texas A&M Transportation Institute.  It was conducted at their proving ground in College Station, TX, USA.

“Durisol’s aluminum noise barrier system provided excellent vehicle stability,” explained Dean C. Alberson, P.E., Ph. D., Senior Research Engineer at Safe Roads Engineering. “Despite the severity of the impact of the crash, the wall panels remained in place and intact, without flying debris and minimal damage.”

“As part of the engineering team that developed the system, it is a rewarding moment when a crash-test is so successful,” added Mark Ayton, Senior Engineer at Safe Roads Engineering. “It means a safer noise barrier system will now be available for installation on bridges across North America.”

Durisol® now holds the official test results and approval in hand.

The MASH TL-4 testing criteria is dictated by AASHTO (the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials). To replicate worst practical conditions, the crash test is conducted with a 10,206 KG (22,500 LB) box truck is tested at speeds of 93 KM/H (58.5 MPH), at an impact angle of 15 degrees.

The company completes MASH crash tests for their wall systems so that: “We can have the peace-of-mind knowing that our barriers are going to perform when they are needed most in real world scenarios. By completing these tests, we can pass that peace-of-mind onto our customers,” explains Mark Van Bakel, President, Durisol Ltd. “We are pleased to be setting the industry standard for noise barriers.”

Aluminum wall panels are a viable noise barrier option, backed by the manufacturing quality of over 25 years. The lightweight, ready-made system is prefabricated, with the additional installation advantage of a tongue and groove assembly. When working alongside live traffic lanes, a quicker install, can mean a safer job for our installation partners.

With safety being top of mind for Durisol, there is additional interest around the ability to integrate visual cues within the aluminum wall design; this design technique has been proven to help highlight and direct traffic flow due to the wide variety of color selection for the panels.

Durisol has an in-house engineering team to design all noise barrier systems alongside its client partner.

How does it absorb noise? Built with perforations and a sound absorbing mineral wool interior to respond to specific noise absorption and/or reflection mitigation requirements. Double-sided noise absorption (with NRC 0.90)

Benefits? The Durisol Aluminum noise wall product offers virtually limitless colours for complete design flexibility, while also being a cost-effective material for road, highway and railway noise mitigation projects.

Additional testing? The Durisol Aluminum noise wall product has been tested for freeze-thaw, scaling

Other crash-tested systems? Durisol offers other precast and transparent MASH-compliant TL-3 and TL-4 crash-tested noise barrier systems. Please inquire to learn more.
