Cornwall construction projects nearing completion, despite COVID-19

The construction season in the City of Cornwall is soon set to conclude for another year and according to manager of infrastructure and municipal works Michael Fawthrop, it’s been quite an excellent season. That’s even despite the COVID-19 pandemic introducing its fair share of challenges.

“It was really successful from our perspective,” said Fawthrop. “We managed to solve some of the challenges that we faced with the ongoing pandemic. There were some definitely some challenges because of some of those impacts.”

So what were the challenges associated with COVID? Well, for one, there were some material and equipment shortages, which led to some contractors having some difficulty in getting what they needed within a normal timeline.

Even so, Fawthrop confirmed to the Standard-Freeholder the city’s current projects would all be opened to traffic before the start of winter.

“We’re pretty much on schedule for everything,” he said. “There may be some (projects) that we might have to revisit next year to do final paving and final landscaping like we normally do.

“It was a good construction season.”

This year’s main roadwork projects included the extension of Nick Kaneb Drive from Marleau Avenue all the way to Virginia Drive. For the past few months, construction crews have been hard at work building the new corridor.

The project also includes the installation of a new recreational path, a new storm sewer network and the improvement of the intersection.
