Contract awarded for conceptual design of the Dawson recreation centre

The Government of Yukon has awarded the Phase 1a contract for the conceptual and schematic design of the new Dawson recreation centre to Wildstone Construction & Engineering Ltd. This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to fostering environments that promote social connection and well-being for Yukoners through sustainable infrastructure development.

Progressive Design-Build Procurement Method

The project employs the progressive design-build procurement method, which integrates design and construction phases into a single procurement. This approach encourages collaboration between the contractor and stakeholders, ensuring the contractor’s expertise is incorporated into the project design. The Government of Yukon, in collaboration with the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Government and the City of Dawson, is prioritizing community needs in this development.

Replacing the Art and Margaret Fry Recreation Centre

The new Dawson recreation centre is set to replace the Art and Margaret Fry Recreation Centre, offering a modern space for physical activity and community engagement. Awarding this contract marks a significant step forward in bringing a new community hub to Klondike residents. Recreation facilities are essential for fostering physical activity, social connectedness, and mental well-being. Investing in recreational infrastructure is an investment in a happier, healthier community.

Richard Mostyn, Minister of Community Services:

“Awarding this contract brings Dawsonites one significant step closer to having a new community hub. Recreation is vital for community health, fostering physical activity and mental well-being.”

Economic and Cultural Benefits

The project promises substantial economic benefits for Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Citizens and contractors. Community involvement is key to ensuring the facility is culturally appropriate and meets the diverse needs of Dawson residents.

Hähkè Darren Taylor, Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in:

“We are excited about this infrastructure development in Dawson. It brings economic benefits and the opportunity to create a culturally appropriate facility for our community.”

Collaboration for Community Advancement

The City of Dawson is committed to advancing this essential piece of infrastructure in partnership with the Yukon and Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Governments, and with the guidance of the citizen-led Dawson City Recreation Board.

Bill Kendrick, Mayor of Dawson City:

“The award of this contract to Wildstone Construction & Engineering Ltd. is a critical step towards our new recreation centre. We look forward to working with our partners to complete this vital project.”

This project represents a significant milestone in developing a sustainable and community-focused recreation facility in Dawson, promising long-term benefits for the health and well-being of its residents.
