Consulting Engineers from across Canada celebrate 50 years of Excellence in the industry

(OTTAWA) October 23, 2018 – From efficient building and iconic bridge designs, to enhancing the delivery of critical infrastructure and resource development, the work of consulting engineering firms was on full display in Ottawa Tuesday night, as twenty leading-edge projects received the highest recognition for engineering excellence at the 2018 Canadian Consulting Engineering (CCE) Awards gala.

Twenty Awards of Excellence were handed out in a range of categories. Of these, five were recognized with additional Special Achievement Awards for demonstrating the highest level of technical innovation, dedication to the environment, Canadian expertise abroad, and engineering that most enhances Canadians’ social, economic or cultural quality of life. Winners were selected by independent jurors with distinguished backgrounds in various sectors of the industry.

Now in their 50th year, the CCE awards are presented jointly by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies-Canada (ACEC) and Canadian Consulting Engineer magazine. “Tonight, we not only celebrate this year’s incredible projects, we celebrate the extraordinary work of consulting engineers over the past 50 years and the important role they have on the social, economic and environmental quality of life of all Canadians,” said ACEC President and CEO John Gamble. “Consulting engineers have a direct impact on our communities and our daily lives. The CCE awards are our chance to recognize these achievements on a national stage.”

In addition, ACEC presented three awards to deserving individuals and teams. The 2018 Beaubien Award for lifetime achievement was presented to Chris Newcomb, P.Eng., of McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. The Chair’s Award for exceptional contributions to the industry was bestowed to the team at Public Services and Procurement Canada, led by Assistant Deputy Minister Arianne Reza, for championing a Qualifications-Based Selection (QBS) pilot project. Finally, the 2019 Allen D. Williams scholarship, recognizing a young professional’s commitment to consulting engineering, was awarded to Graham Lovely, P.Eng., of MCW Consultants Ltd.

Since 1968, over 170 Member Firms, at times in partnership with others, have been recognized with an award for projects of high quality, innovation, and technical excellence. In all, some 459 projects have been awarded for their outstanding achievement in all areas of consulting engineering work.
