Construction crew in Saskatchewan barely dodge speeding vehicle in closed lane

Wherever you’re reading this, take a look around. Now, would you want someone speeding through the place at highway speed? Unless you’re a corner worker at Mosport, probably not. And even then, you’d likely rather they stay out on the track and not near your spotter’s stand. That’s why it’s critical to slow down when making your way through a congested construction zone.

Crews on a highway paving site in Saskatchewan had to bail out of their positions yesterday as a speeding car drove through their place of work in an erratic manner. Barrelling through a closed lane, the vehicle went on to strike two more vehicles before hitting a ditch and turning turtle. The driver was transported to hospital but no critical injuries were reported.

“We have no protection,” said Allan Barilla, the general manager of the construction company at the site in an interview with the CBC. “I’ve said this before, I tell our crew the only protection we have is paint and plastic.” The man has a point. Short of diving out of the way or jumping aboard a construction vehicle, workers in these situations often have little place to go.

It should be noted that it’s not immediately clear if the driver suffered a medical emergency which caused the crash or if they were simply on their phone and not paying attention. Ironically, cops were already on the way to the scene in response to Barilla reporting a white pickup truck trying to pass a string of cars in a closed lane.
