Concrete infrastructure along Mosaic Stadium concourse failing

The City of Regina is looking for a company to fix concrete infrastructure at Mosaic Stadium in time for the start of the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ 2020 season.

A tender seeking a contractor to “retrofit expansion joint covers” at the stadium was posted on March 3. According to the public tender “the City requires a long-term solution to replace failing expansion joint covers and add control joint covers at designated locations at Mosaic Stadium.”

Expansion joints are structural gaps in concrete meant to accommodate expansion and contraction of a building during seasonal changes in temperature. The joint cover is a metal plate that covers the joint allowing for a smooth transition between segments of concrete. Jeff May, manager of sport facilities and special events, said the worst-case scenario would lead to an uneven walking surface that could become a trip hazard.

May said the issue came to light after the stadium opened in 2017, but after three seasons of operation, the city felt the need to address it.

“After we got a couple of years under our belt, then we started to notice some issues,” said May.

There are approximately 393 metres of joint covers that need to be replaced along the main concourse of the stadium.

But the city isn’t concerned about the problem, according to May.
