The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) is applauding the federal government’s recent announcement from the Major Projects Office (MPO), which will grant expedited approvals and priority status to critical nation-building infrastructure projects.
According to Rodrigue Gilbert, President of the CCA, the decision reflects years of advocacy from the construction industry to cut red tape and invest in strategic infrastructure. Through initiatives like the Canadian Trade Infrastructure Plan (CTIP), the CCA has consistently called for long-term investment in road, rail, air, port, and marine assets to support Canada’s economy.
“Today’s announcement further cements the importance of our industry and the role we play in supporting and enhancing the everyday lives of millions of Canadians, enabling our national economy, and bolstering our supply chains,” said Gilbert.
By prioritizing key infrastructure projects, the federal government is signaling a long-term commitment to improving Canada’s trade networks and transportation systems. These projects are expected to unlock natural resources, improve supply chain efficiency, and create thousands of well-paying jobs for Canadians.
Gilbert emphasized the importance of investing in “shovel-worthy” projects—those that deliver significant economic benefits—over projects that are merely shovel-ready. “We must prioritize those projects that will move the needle for our economy, and we believe the federal government has done just that,” he noted.
The announcement also represents a major win for the CCA’s Canadian Trade Infrastructure Plan. This strategy is designed to secure long-term economic growth through critical investments in transportation and trade-enabling infrastructure. By granting priority status to several of these projects, the MPO is laying the groundwork for a stronger and more resilient Canadian economy.
The CCA looks forward to continuing its collaboration with the federal government to ensure ongoing consultation with industry stakeholders. By focusing on projects that strengthen Canada’s economy and improve trade capacity, the construction industry is poised to play a central role in building a stronger, more competitive Canada.
