Yale carbon scare - construction workers
January 20, 2024

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning at Yale University Hospitalizes Construction Workers

A critical incident occurred at a Yale University-owned building, where blood tests of a construction worker who collapsed revealed elevated carbon monoxide levels, leading to the hospitalization of 14 individuals, including nine construction workers and five Yale Security Department members. The incident, initially thought to be a regular medical emergency, was identified as carbon monoxide poisoning when the worker was found to have dangerously high levels in his bloodstream. Subsequent investigation found 13 additional people with elevated levels and symptoms, attributed to the use of a propane-fueled saw for concrete cutting within the building. Despite efforts to vent the fumes, they remained trapped inside, reaching levels 10 times higher than the permissible limit. The timely discovery of the situation potentially prevented more severe outcomes. Two of the hospitalized individuals were in critical and serious conditions, respectively. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is now investigating the incident, while Yale first responders ensured the safety of adjacent areas. This event highlights the insidious nature of carbon monoxide and the importance of proper ventilation and detection systems in work environments.
