CarbiCrete Unveils First EPD for Ultra-Low Carbon Concrete

CarbiCrete and Climate Earth have unveiled the first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for CarbiCrete’s cement-free concrete masonry units (CMUs), showcasing groundbreaking advancements in sustainable construction. CarbiCrete’s technology replaces cement with a steel-making by-product and mineralizes CO2 into concrete, achieving a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 11.7 kg CO2 eq per cubic meter—20 times lower than the industry average. Verified under ASTM requirements, this EPD provides architects, engineers, and builders with precise data to meet sustainability goals. The CMUs, produced by Patio Drummond in Quebec, set a new standard for low-carbon concrete.

CarbiCrete’s innovative approach avoids cement emissions and permanently stores carbon dioxide, significantly reducing the environmental footprint of concrete. This technology not only decarbonizes the built environment but also empowers the construction industry to adopt sustainable solutions. CarbiCrete CEO Jacob Homiller emphasized the EPD’s role in enabling informed decision-making for sustainable construction, while Climate Earth CEO Chris Erickson highlighted the importance of capturing product-specific carbon reductions. Together, they aim to drive clarity and precision in sustainability reporting.

In January, CarbiCrete and Climate Earth will co-host a webinar detailing their LCA/EPD process and CarbiCrete’s extraordinary GWP reductions. Further expanding their impact, Canal Block in Ontario will begin producing CarbiCrete products in early 2025, marking continued growth for this innovative technology.
