Cape Breton roofers say ‘hundreds’ of homes still awaiting Fiona repairs

It’s been a year since post-tropical storm Fiona battered Cape Breton homes. But local roofing companies say they’re still as busy — if not busier — than ever with repairs.

“I probably get more calls now than I did six months ago,” said Donald Campbell, who runs That’s Right Roofing and Renovations. Outstanding repairs are a large part of the calls. But much of the reason for the volume now is that it’s September, meaning colder weather isn’t far away.

In past years, Campbell said most of his business’s work is complete by this time of year. But his workload has almost doubled from last year, so it will be a while yet.

“With the winter coming on, people are back in panic mode.”

Colin Jack runs ACL Roofing in Sydney. He said his business gets between two and six calls every week asking for a repair — about 75 per cent for Fiona-related damages.

“Quite a few of them have been leaks since Fiona,” Jack said. He also has customers urgently calling for repairs because insurance companies are pushing customers to complete repairs before winter.
