Canadian Institute Construction Risk Conference Returns to Toronto in 2027

The Canadian Institute will bring its 19th National Conference on Navigating Risk in Construction Projects & Contracts, East back to Toronto on March 3–4, 2027, bringing construction and legal professionals together to examine the contractual, commercial and operational risks affecting project delivery.

Taking place at the Hilton Garden Inn Toronto Airport, the two-day conference will connect contractors, project owners, legal counsel, engineers, architects and consultants for discussions focused on translating legal and industry developments into practical construction project strategies.

Construction Law Meets Project Delivery

Every procurement decision, contract provision and change order can influence project costs, schedules and commercial exposure. The 2027 conference will examine these issues from both legal and project-delivery perspectives, with sessions covering contract administration, risk allocation and dispute prevention.

The conference is co-chaired by Samantha Ambrozy, Solicitor – Legal Department at the Toronto Transit Commission, and Mark St Cyr, Partner at Cassels, Brock & Blackwell LLP. The program is designed to bring together in-house and external counsel perspectives while examining risk throughout the construction project lifecycle.

Ontario Construction Act Reforms and Procurement

Ontario’s evolving construction regulatory and procurement environment will be a major part of the program.

Sessions will examine practical lessons arising from Ontario’s Construction Act reforms, including holdback release, adjudication and invoice administration. Attendees will also explore procurement and contract developments, including Buy Ontario Act directives and updated CCDC documents.

Delivery-model selection will be another focus, examining how project complexity, market capacity and contractor appetite can influence procurement strategies.

Collaborative Delivery, Insurance and Construction Claims

As alternative and collaborative project delivery models become part of increasingly complex construction environments, the conference will explore their financial, contractual and risk implications.

Discussions on collaborative-delivery economics will address target pricing, contractor margins, incentives and shared risk. Insurance sessions will examine potential liability and coverage gaps associated with Alliance, Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and Progressive delivery models.

Construction claims and project controls will also be addressed, with attention to delays, productivity loss and change orders.

AI and Digital Risk in Construction

Artificial intelligence is creating new considerations for construction contracts, project records and risk management.

The conference will examine AI-generated evidence, estimates, schedules and designs, providing attendees with an opportunity to consider how digital information could affect project administration, documentation and commercial risk.

The topic adds another dimension to construction risk management as project teams increasingly incorporate AI and digital technologies into planning and delivery workflows.

Lessons From Major Infrastructure Projects

Case studies involving transit, healthcare and public infrastructure projects will connect legal and commercial discussions with practical project-delivery experience.

Moderated roundtables will also allow participants to exchange perspectives on construction team collaboration and the implications of contractor migration.

The conference will address project closeout as well, including strategies for reducing risks related to commissioning, handover and operational readiness.

Now in its 19th iteration, the National Conference on Navigating Risk in Construction Projects & Contracts provides a forum where construction and legal professionals can examine risk from multiple perspectives.

By bringing together owners, contractors, lawyers, engineers, architects and consultants, the event is designed to encourage knowledge sharing around contracts, procurement, project controls, claims and collaborative project delivery.
