Canadian Galvanizing Institute Opens Complimentary Membership to Engineers and Architects

The Canadian Galvanizing Institute (CGI-IGC) is launching a new complimentary membership initiative designed to increase collaboration between Canada’s engineering and architectural community and the galvanizing and construction industries.

Beginning December 1, 2026, engineers, architects and consulting firms will be eligible for complimentary CGI-IGC membership in exchange for active participation in the Institute’s committees, roundtable discussions, technical sessions and other industry initiatives.

According to CGI-IGC, the program represents a new approach to professional participation by replacing membership fees for eligible design professionals with a commitment to contribute expertise and industry knowledge.

Engineers and Architects Invited to Participate

Under the new membership model, participating engineers and architects will be asked to contribute several times each year through CGI-IGC committee meetings, roundtables or other activities.

Most meetings will be held virtually, allowing professionals across Canada to participate. In-person discussions may also be organized when sessions take place in participants’ home provinces.

Consulting, engineering and architectural firms can participate by appointing a representative from each office seeking complimentary membership.

Companies with multiple offices can enrol each location provided that every participating office appoints a representative who meets the participation commitment.

Membership will remain complimentary as long as that commitment is maintained.

Connecting Design Professionals With Construction Industry Issues

CGI-IGC President and CEO Hellen Christodoulou said engineers and architects have an important role in shaping the future of construction and helping industry organizations identify practical solutions to emerging challenges.

“The design community has an essential role in shaping the future of construction,” Christodoulou said.

The initiative is intended to create more opportunities for design professionals to contribute directly to discussions involving technical guidance, policy, quality assurance and control, education, case studies, durability, innovation and sustainability.

Participants will also be able to share project experiences and identify recurring challenges that could help guide the development of future CGI-IGC resources and industry initiatives.

Collaboration Focuses on Galvanizing and Durable Construction

The new program could strengthen communication between professionals specifying construction materials and the companies and technical experts involved in galvanizing and steel protection.

Galvanizing plays a role in protecting structural steel and other steel components from corrosion, making collaboration between designers, engineers, specifiers and industry specialists important to the development of durable infrastructure and building projects.

CGI-IGC says the initiative is designed to improve alignment between design requirements and industry practices while ensuring its technical work reflects challenges encountered across the broader construction sector.

Participating members will also receive additional benefits associated with CGI events and educational activities.

CGI-IGC Targets Broader Industry Participation Across Canada

The virtual format is intended to make participation accessible to engineering, architectural and consulting professionals across Canada rather than concentrating involvement in individual regions.

CGI-IGC says leaders from major consulting firms have already expressed interest in the initiative.

The Institute is now inviting engineers, architects and consulting firms to express their interest and identify representatives for participating offices. CGI-IGC will provide enrolment information along with details about upcoming committees and roundtable opportunities.

Christodoulou said the initiative reflects the value of bringing different parts of Canada’s construction and steel industries together to address common priorities.

“This is an invitation to share responsibility for progress, to listen, contribute, and turn common priorities into meaningful action,” she said.

New Membership Model Begins December 1

The complimentary membership initiative officially begins December 1, 2026.

The Canadian Galvanizing Institute is a national, bilingual, not-for-profit organization focused on technical knowledge, education, research and collaboration related to galvanizing and its use in durable and sustainable construction.

By connecting engineers, architects and consulting firms more directly with industry participants, CGI-IGC aims to broaden the expertise contributing to technical resources and discussions affecting galvanized steel, infrastructure and construction across Canada.
