The Government of Canada will begin accepting applications November 16, 2026, for a new $5,000 Red Seal Completion Bonus aimed at encouraging more apprentices to complete their training and become certified skilled trades workers.
The bonus is part of the federal government’s $8 billion Team Canada Strong initiative, which aims to recruit, train and hire between 80,000 and 100,000 new Red Seal skilled trades workers by 2030-31.
Canada is facing significant demand for skilled workers to support housing construction, infrastructure, energy development and other major projects. The federal government estimates there will be more than 1.4 million job openings in the skilled trades between 2024 and 2033.
Journeypersons who completed an apprenticeship and obtained certification in an eligible Red Seal trade designated within their province or territory on or after April 1, 2025, can qualify for the $5,000 payment.
Applicants must also be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons and cannot currently be attending high school.
The federal program page indicates eligible journeypersons can receive $5,000 for each eligible Red Seal certification, up to a maximum of $50,000.
The application portal is scheduled to open November 16, 2026.
Eligible tradespeople are being encouraged to prepare their documentation in advance. Required information includes a Social Insurance Number, mailing address, banking information for direct deposit, Red Seal trade and certification date, province or territory of certification and apprentice identification number.
Permanent residents with a SIN beginning with 9 and protected persons will also need to provide proof of their status in Canada.
Tradespeople certified between April 1, 2025, and November 15, 2026, must submit their applications by May 31, 2027.
For certifications obtained on or after November 16, 2026, applications must be received within 12 months of the certification date.
Applicants must also submit all required supporting documents within 28 calendar days after beginning an application or start a new application. Additional documentation may be required depending on the province or territory where certification was obtained.
The completion bonus forms part of a much broader federal effort to increase Canada’s skilled trades workforce.
Team Canada Strong is designed to address barriers throughout the apprenticeship process, from attracting people into trades careers to training, certification and employment.
Other measures include paid youth placements, expanded apprenticeship training capacity, modernization of the Red Seal Program, employment supports and a planned $400 weekly Apprenticeship Training Grant for eligible apprentices attending mandatory technical training.
The federal government says it already provides nearly $1 billion annually in apprenticeship supports through loans, project funding, tax measures, Employment Insurance benefits and support for the Red Seal Program.
The initiative comes as Canada’s construction industry faces growing workforce requirements associated with housing, transportation, energy infrastructure and other major projects.
Federal projections indicate the country could need more than 1.4 million additional trades workers by 2033 as retirements and economic growth increase labour demand. In 2024, more than 100,000 apprentices registered, but only about 34,000 completed their apprenticeship, according to the government’s Spring Economic Update.
By providing a financial incentive at the point of certification, the Red Seal Completion Bonus is intended to encourage more apprentices to complete their training and transition into Canada’s certified skilled trades workforce.
