Statistics Canada reports that the total value of building permits in Canada increased 18.5% in June 2026 to $14.9 billion, rebounding by $2.3 billion and more than offsetting declines recorded in April and May. Growth was driven primarily by non-residential construction intentions, while residential permits also advanced.
The value of non-residential building permits increased $1.8 billion to $6.8 billion in June. Institutional permits led the surge, rising $1.5 billion to $3.2 billion, supported largely by Ontario and newly approved permits for a medical institution in the Toronto census metropolitan area.
Industrial permits increased $268.8 million to $1.2 billion, led by Saskatchewan and Ontario, while commercial permits rose $67.9 million to $2.4 billion.
Residential building permits climbed 6.3% to $8.1 billion. Multi-unit construction intentions increased $283.7 million to $5.3 billion, driven by Quebec and supported by Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Single-family permits rose $196 million to $2.8 billion, with Alberta posting the largest provincial increase, followed by Quebec.
For the second quarter of 2026, the total value of Canadian building permits increased 3.7% to $40.4 billion.
Non-residential permits recorded particularly strong momentum, with constant-dollar values reaching $15.4 billion—the largest quarterly increase in the series. Ontario helped push institutional permits to a quarterly record, supported by hospital construction intentions in the Toronto area.
Residential permits, however, declined 4.3% to $21.1 billion in Q2, largely due to weaker multi-unit activity. Approximately 80,000 residential units were authorized during the quarter, compared with 82,200 a year earlier.
