Calgary Construction Industry Takes Action on Mental Health with Tailgate Toolkit Initiative

The Calgary Construction Association (CCA), in collaboration with The City of Calgary, has launched the “Tailgate Toolkit” recovery resource pilot program to address substance use, mental health, and workplace safety in the construction industry. Funded through a $283,000 investment under Calgary’s Mental Health and Addiction Investment Framework, this initiative aims to provide substance awareness, access to support programs, and safer work environments for Calgary’s construction workers.

What is the Tailgate Toolkit?

Originally developed by the Vancouver Island Construction Association (VICA), the Tailgate Toolkit is a targeted mental health and substance use support program tailored for the construction sector. Using tailgate meetings, on-site engagement, and training, the program raises awareness, offers resources, and connects workers with recovery services.

Why is This Program Needed?

The construction industry faces alarming rates of substance use and mental health issues, making this initiative a crucial step toward prevention and support:

  • 53% of opioid-related deaths among employed individuals in Alberta occur in the trades, transport, and equipment sectors (Government of Alberta).
  • The suicide rate in construction is three times higher than the national average, with 53.2 suicides per 100,000 workers compared to 17.3 in the general population (CDC).
  • 33% of construction workers report poor mental health.

Impact and Industry Commitment

The Tailgate Toolkit is more than just a mental health initiative; it is a commitment to improving workplace safety, reducing stigma, and fostering a culture of support within Calgary’s construction industry. By bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and community organizations, the program aims to create a safer, healthier, and more resilient workforce.
