Calgary Construction Association Announces Historic Investment in Elementary School Programming

The Calgary Construction Association (CCA) is proud to announce a groundbreaking initiative that will bring a skilled-trades curriculum supplement to over 30,000 elementary students across Calgary this fall. In collaboration with the “Honour The Work” program, this historic investment aims to tackle the growing skilled trades labour shortage by inspiring the next generation to consider careers in this vital sector.

The CCA recognizes that the labour shortage is one of the most pressing challenges facing the construction industry today. As a leading industry association, the CCA is committed to being at the forefront of addressing this issue by fostering interest in skilled trades among today’s youth. Through the Calgary Construction Association Education Fund, the CCA has partnered with “Honour The Work” to deliver an innovative curriculum that will reach 850 classrooms across the Calgary Catholic School District and the Calgary Board of Education.

“Honour The Work” was created by educators and supported by industry leaders to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world skilled trades careers. The program features the STEAMS Kits (Science – Technology – Art- Engineering – Math – Skills), designed for students in grades 1-6. These kits offer hands-on activities that align with the curriculum and include lesson plans, digital resources, building materials, and diverse children’s books that highlight the value of skilled trades.

First launched in Ontario with remarkable success, the “Honour The Work” program is now set to pilot in Calgary schools, marking one of the largest direct industry investments in elementary school education related to skilled trades in Canadian history. This initiative underscores the CCA’s commitment to investing in the future workforce and ensuring that students are exposed to the many opportunities available within the skilled trades. Fund from Procore Technologies, Inc., the leading global provider of construction management software, is also supporting this pilot program.

“The labour shortage is the challenge of our times, and we believe it’s our responsibility to lead the charge in addressing this issue,” said Bill Black, President and CEO of the Calgary Construction Association. “By introducing students to the skilled trades early on, we are not only helping to secure the future of our industry but also providing young people with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in these rewarding careers.”

“Procore is deeply committed to advancing the construction industry through advocacy, education and technology,” said Nolan Frazier, regional sales director for Canada at Procore. “We’re proud to support the Calgary Construction Association as it launches this important initiative to educate and attract the next generation workforce, setting up students and the industry for future success.”

The Calgary Construction Association is excited to see the positive impact this program will have on students, educators, and the community. By fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of skilled trades, the CCA is helping to build a stronger, more sustainable future for Calgary’s construction industry and beyond.
