Burnaby climate change construction

Burnaby introduces stronger climate requirements for new construction

The City of Burnaby has announced the introduction of enhanced climate requirements for new building projects. Starting in 2024, all new single and two-family homes will need to meet Emission Level 3 standards, marking a significant step towards stronger carbon performance. This initiative is part of a larger, proactive approach to address climate change, aligning with federal and provincial efforts to boost energy efficiency in buildings across British Columbia.

Notably, these new regulations come at a time when environmental sustainability is a key focus for communities and governments alike. Burnaby’s commitment to retrofitting existing buildings by 2050 to reduce carbon emissions further underscores this dedication. As part of the CleanBC Roadmap to 2030 plan, these measures exemplify the city’s leadership in adopting continent-leading climate strategies that are both effective and forward-thinking. With these bold steps, Burnaby is setting a standard for other cities to follow in the battle against climate change.
