Built Green Canada has opened entries for its fourth annual Maverick Awards, recognizing outstanding projects, organizations and individuals advancing sustainable building within the Built Green community. The 2027 awards program includes four categories and introduces a new Breakthrough Award designed to recognize builders, renovators, restorers and developers taking meaningful steps toward more sustainable building practices.
New for 2027, the Breakthrough Award recognizes organizations that are new to Built Green Canada and have achieved a sustainability breakthrough through the organization’s certification programs.
Eligibility is limited to builders, renovators, restorers and developers that became Built Green Canada members within the past two years and have certified their first project through the organization.
The category is intended to recognize progress at different stages of the sustainable building journey, from initial improvements to more significant advances in building practices.
Built Green Canada has also updated its nomination forms for the 2027 program. The revised forms reduce the amount of written information required while providing more specific prompts designed to make submissions clearer and easier to complete.
The 2027 Maverick Awards feature four categories highlighting different contributions to sustainable construction:
Ambassador Award: Recognizes individuals and organizations actively encouraging and promoting sustainable building practices.
Breakthrough Award: Celebrates builders, renovators, restorers and developers that are new to Built Green Canada and sustainable building practices and have demonstrated measurable progress.
Innovation Award: Recognizes new approaches and ideas that demonstrate how sustainable building can drive innovation and advance the construction industry.
Transformational Award: Highlights the impact sustainability practices can have in creating meaningful change, supported by a clear before-and-after result.
Eligible individuals and organizations can submit their own entry or nominate another individual, organization or qualifying project.
Unlike traditional industry awards programs, Built Green Canada’s Maverick Awards do not culminate in a standalone awards event. Instead, four Mavericks will be announced in March, followed by an integrated marketing campaign highlighting the winners and their achievements.
Built Green Canada develops a series of promotional assets featuring each winner as part of its communications and marketing activities. These materials are also intended to provide winners with content they can use in their own promotional efforts, extending recognition beyond the initial awards announcement.
The approach is designed to put sustained attention on the people, companies and projects contributing to more responsible and sustainable building practices.
Sponsorship opportunities are also open for the 2027 Maverick Awards. The addition of the Breakthrough Award creates another opportunity for organizations to support and celebrate progress in sustainable building.
Returning sponsors already confirmed for the 2027 program include the Alberta Real Estate Foundation and Excel Homes.
Through the Maverick Awards, Built Green Canada continues to highlight the individuals, organizations and projects helping advance sustainable building practices while recognizing achievements ranging from early progress to industry innovation and transformation.
