Bird Construction Partners with Atkinsréalis for Innovative East Harbour Transit Hub Project in Toronto

Bird Construction, in a landmark joint venture with AtkinsRéalis, has embarked on an ambitious project: the development of the East Harbour Transit Hub in Toronto. This partnership, operating under the name Rail Connect (RC) Partners, is a significant step forward in the infrastructure sector, particularly for Bird Construction.

The East Harbour Transit Hub is a key component of Toronto’s SmartTrack Stations Program and represents a pioneering approach in Canadian infrastructure development. It’s one of the first major projects in the country to be procured using an ‘alliance’ model—a method that has gained international acclaim for its effectiveness in planning and executing large-scale infrastructure programs. This model emphasizes innovation, collaboration, and a shared approach to managing risks, fostering greater transparency and joint decision-making among all parties involved.

The current phase under the Alliance Development Agreement focuses on fine-tuning the design, assessing resources, costs, and scheduling in detail, preparing a comprehensive project proposal, finalizing the Project Alliance Agreement, and initiating Early Works.

Teri McKibbon, the President and CEO of Bird, highlighted the strategic importance of this project. He emphasized Bird’s commitment to expanding its infrastructure portfolio while carefully selecting projects that align with its risk management strategies. Bird’s involvement in the East Harbour Transit Hub project leverages its extensive experience in collaborative contracting and its wide range of self-perform capabilities, including those from Dagmar, acquired in 2021.

This project is more than just an infrastructure development; it’s a commitment to innovation, continuous improvement, and productivity. Bird, together with Metrolinx and other stakeholders, is dedicated to delivering this essential infrastructure, which is crucial for meeting the needs of future generations.
