BC Hydro Begins Filling Site C Reservoir Dam

BC Hydro has started filling the reservoir for the Site C dam in northeastern British Columbia, marking one of the final steps toward the project’s completion. Located near Fort St. John, the reservoir will take two to four months to fill and will cover about 5,550 hectares of land, spanning an area of approximately 9,330 hectares. The public is advised to stay away from the reservoir for at least a year due to potential hazards such as unstable terrain and floating debris. Now over 85% complete, the project’s first power-generating unit is set to begin operations in December 2024. Once all six generators are online by fall 2025, the dam will add 1,100 megawatts of electricity capacity, providing about 5,100 gigawatt hours annually, an eight-percent boost to B.C.’s power supply. This output will be enough to power nearly 500,000 homes or 1.7 million electric vehicles. BC Hydro aims to complete the project within the $16 billion budget set in 2021.
