Alternative Energy in Construction Expands Beyond Diesel with Electric, Hydrogen and Renewable Fuels

Conventional diesel remains the dominant fuel for construction equipment, but battery-electric power, renewable diesel, natural gas and hydrogen are creating new opportunities for contractors to reduce emissions without sacrificing productivity. As highlighted at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026, manufacturers are addressing key adoption barriers including equipment cost, charging infrastructure and operational flexibility. Moog Construction’s Adaptive Electrification Management System aims to simplify equipment electrification while reducing electronics costs and parts, while VMAC is bringing battery-electric technology to rotary screw air compressors for service trucks. Hitek Equipment is also reducing propane dependence with an electric-heated screed powered by the host loader. Meanwhile, Cummins introduced its next-generation X15 Off-highway Engine, built on the HELM fuel-agnostic platform. The system uses a common engine architecture that can support diesel, natural gas, hydrogen and other fuels through tailored components. Together, these innovations demonstrate how construction equipment manufacturers are giving contractors more practical pathways toward lower-carbon operations while maintaining uptime, efficiency and cost control.
