Vancouver concrete strike
July 4, 2024

All eyes on looming strike that could hit BC’s construction sector Friday

The union representing Vancouver-area concrete workers, Teamsters Local 213, has given Heidelberg Materials, one of the world’s largest building materials companies, an ultimatum to accept their proposals on pensions and other issues by Friday or face a strike. The union’s threat was posted on social media, warning of potential chaos in Vancouver’s construction industry. In contrast, Heidelberg Materials claims the negotiations have been productive, with Government Mediation Services involved. This potential strike recalls the significant impact of a previous five-week strike two years ago, which caused major delays and cost increases on projects like the Broadway Subway line. That strike reduced the region’s concrete supply by a third, affecting asphalt and cement supply and causing long-term issues even after a resolution was reached.
