Alberta proposes more safety for roadside workers

The Alberta government is introducing Bill 5 aimed at improving safety for roadside workers.

Under Bill 5, protection is given to roadside maintenance workers and snowplow operators, which is similar to first responders and tow truck operators.

In the Traffic Safety Amendment Act, proposed changes will require all drivers travelling in the same direction to slow down to at least 60 km/h when passing a stopped roadside worker vehicle with its lights flashing.

On a single-lane highway, drivers travelling in the opposite direction will also have to lower their speed to 60 km/h if they pass a stopped roadside worker.

Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Transportation, hopes to see roadside workers protected through the proposed changes.

“Roadside workers work in a high-risk environment and deserve the best protection so that they can go home safely to their families at the end of their shift. That’s why, following consultations with the public and stakeholders, Alberta’s government is proposing these changes to protect all those working along our highways.”

The province will conduct an educational campaign for all drivers prior to the anticipated enforcement date of spring 2023.
