The Government of Alberta has chosen a new contractor for the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital project after firing former contractor Graham Construction in September.

“Alberta Infrastructure has selected a new general contractor for the project and are currently finalizing contractual details,” said a spokesperson in Alberta Infrastructure. “Until the contract is signed, we are not in a position to disclose the successful bidder.”

More details are expected within the coming weeks.

“Our government is building an economy that works for everyone and that means making sure our loved ones get the health care they need,” the spokesperson added. “We remain committed to the timely completion of the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.”

On July 30, the province issued a Notice of Default to Graham Construction that gave the company 15 business days to submit a proposed mitigation strategy. The company submitted the strategy Aug. 17.

After reviewing the mitigation plan, the government fired Graham Construction Sept. 10 due to issues over the project’s timeline and budget and informed the subcontractors for the project about their rights and options.

Construction has been suspended since the firing with the province issuing a request for proposals. The province previously stated a new construction manager would be in place by the end of October with construction resuming in November.
