At its annual conference in Miami, Florida, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) inducted three pioneering figures into its prestigious AEM Hall of Fame: Billy Robert “B.R.” Lee, founder of LeeBoy; Art and Panny McElroy, co-founders of McElroy Manufacturing; and Nicolaus August Otto, engineer and inventor associated with DEUTZ. All three honorees were inducted posthumously in recognition of their significant contributions to the construction and equipment manufacturing sectors.

B.R. Lee, a North Carolina native, transformed the commercial paving industry in the 1970s with the invention of the first self-propelled, gas-powered commercial paver. Through his company, LeeBoy, Lee introduced groundbreaking innovations such as variable-width paving, heated screeds, and the now-standard 8-foot paver. His approach to continuous improvement—guided by contractor feedback—set a new standard in equipment design. Lee’s leadership philosophy was deeply rooted in humility, customer satisfaction, and community support, values that still define the LeeBoy brand today.

Art and Panny McElroy founded McElroy Manufacturing in 1954 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Initially a fabrication shop, the company evolved into a global leader in plastic pipe fusion technology. Art’s development of a machine to weld high-density polyethylene pipe revolutionized utility construction, with McElroy becoming a global force in pipe fusion solutions. The McElroys built not only a successful business, but also a family-centered culture focused on customer care, education, and innovation. Panny continued to lead the company after Art’s passing, laying the foundation for the company’s ongoing success under the leadership of their children.

Nicolaus August Otto, the German inventor behind the four-stroke internal combustion engine, revolutionized how mechanical power is produced and used. In 1876, Otto’s innovation laid the groundwork for modern automotive and industrial engines. His earlier collaboration with Eugen Langen formed the world’s first internal combustion engine factory, the predecessor of today’s DEUTZ AG. Otto’s legacy continues to influence engineering and manufacturing worldwide.

With these additions, the AEM Hall of Fame now includes 74 inductees—leaders and innovators who have shaped the equipment manufacturing industry and contributed to the world’s infrastructure, agriculture, and transportation systems. Past honorees include icons such as John Deere, Benjamin Holt, and Mary Andringa.

The AEM Hall of Fame, established in 1993, honors individuals whose innovations, leadership, and commitment have left a lasting mark on equipment manufacturing and its role in building and powering the modern world.
