5 tips for choosing a roofing contractor

There are hundreds of roofing companies in Ottawa and throughout North America. Should you need a roofing contractor to repair or build a roof for your home, you might think you’ve struck gold. However, not every roofing contractor is going to be the proper fit for your needs, especially if they aren’t trustworthy, experienced, and professional. Here are several tips to help you choose a reputable roofing contractor to help return your roof to normal:

1. Referrals

Word of mouth is still one of the best ways to make inferences about roofing contractors, especially because so many still are unlisted online. Call your friends or family or get in contact with local homeowners to see if anyone can make recommendations about a particular roofing contractor and their work. If you can’t find anyone who has hired a roofer recently, you can always check online, read testimonials, and seek out ratings on Google Maps.

2. Designations

Does the roofing contractor’s website or information contain manufacturer designations? If so, good! These designations require the contractor to fulfill certain requirements and maintain a level of quality in order to be factory-certified. Thus, if you see such credentials, you know the individual is well-trained to use such materials or carry out a specific task.

3. Warranties

Though not all contractors are going to offer a warranty or satisfaction guarantee, if they do, you can more security. A manufacturer warranty is also coverage for the workmanship. Remember, if the roof happens to be installed poorly or something is dysfunctional, the negative effects could take months or years to develop. Therefore, you want to have a long-lasting warranty that ensures your covered should such an event occur.

4. Ratings

As mentioned in number 1, there’s a number of ways to ascertain whether or not someone is going to do a satisfactory job without scamming you out of money or security. However, one of the best ways to double check the authenticity of a company is to look at their Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating. Look to see if anyone has logged a complaint to give you an understanding of how the roofing contractor conducts business.

5. Licensing and Insurance

Every contractor worth their salt is going to have professional licensing and insurance. Even subcontractors should be capable of producing an insurance certificate upon request. Should a company not carry adequate insurance, there are a number of problems that can occur. For example, if a roofing employee gets injured while installing the roof and the company can’t cover them, you could wind up in court. Make sure you see proof that the roofing contractor has insurance and licensing (if required by law) so that way you don’t caught up in unfortunate mishaps.

Choosing a contractor, regardless of their specialty, can be different. You have a right to be concerned about whether or not the person you are hiring is professional and skilled enough to handle the job. By using the above tips, you should have no problem selecting the proper individual or group to work on your roof.
