$2.7-million Cambridge construction project could hit the brakes after tenders dry up

A big-ticket item in Cambridge has garnered zero interest.

In a report to council seeking authorization to execute construction and maintenance agreements with Canadian Pacific Railway for the Beverly Street pedestrian underpass, it was revealed there have been no tenders for the project.

Beginning in 2019, studies were undertaken for transportation improvements on Beverly Street and it was decided a new pedestrian and cyclist underpass be constructed on the south side of Beverly Street at the existing constrained Canadian Pacific (CP) Railway road underpass.

The objective of the project, according to the report, was to build a safer and improved means “for pedestrians and cyclists to travel along the Beverly Street corridor through the CP Rail subway.”

The estimated cost of the project is $2.72 million.

Through preliminary discussions with plan takers, the report stated, the primary reasons provided for not submitting a bid were constrained project timelines, strict CP track closure windows, and overall project workloads and volume of work currently out for tender.
