BC Housing and BCBEC to host industry leading event

Do you want to design and build homes that are more sustainable, durable and nicer to live in?

Join BC Housing and the British Columbia Building Envelope Council (BCBEC) on Tuesday, February 26 in Vancouver BC, for a workshop and tradeshow that focuses on high performance building design.

With leading industry experts from across Canada, this Building Smart workshop will focus on innovation and building design considerations required for single and multi-unit buildings. It will explore concepts and design rules to achieve higher standards for livability, high-performance sustainability, and durability of assemblies.

Topics and speakers

Building with Wood: Designing for Durability

Peter Moonen, Technical Manager for Wood WORKS! BC will talk about designing with wood and how it adds a different dimension to durability, as wood is used as a structural and architectural medium in both interior and exterior applications.

Platforms-for-Life: Urban Housing Design Systems

Oliver Lang, founder and principal of LWPAC Lang Wilson Practice in Architecture Culture will focus on required innovation for the vertical integration of design engineered mass-timber based building systems through a start-to-end parametric software and CNC and robotically assisted off-site prefabrication process.

Bird Collisions with Glass: Conservation Opportunities for the Building Sector

Krista De Groot and David Bruce from the Canadian Wildlife Service and the Reifel Bird Sanctuary respectively will explore current incentives for adopting bird-friendly building practices including municipal bird-friendly guidelines and standards, green building certification, and legal issues surrounding accidental deaths of birds that collide with glass.

MURB Design Guide for Enhanced Performance and Liveability

Terri Peters, Architect and Assistant Professor at Ryerson University will present findings from the Multi-Unit Residential Building (MURB) Design Guide, a publication aimed at professionals interested in understanding how to deliver high performance buildings and accessing the latest downloadable building science resources as technical reference materials.

R30+ Effective Roofs in Residential Construction in B.C.

Lorne Ricketts is a Principal and Building Science Specialist with RDH Building Science Inc. Lorne’s presentation will provide an overview of potentially applicable assemblies to meet performance targets for compact (non-attic) roofs on low-rise wood-frame detached and semi-detached homes and townhouses in B.C.
