An engineering team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University has created a novel face mask that can diagnose the wearer with COVID-19 in approximately 90 minutes.
It is embedded with tiny, disposable sensors based on freeze-dried cellular machinery that the researchers had previously developed for use in paper diagnostics for viruses such as Ebola and Zika. When the wearer is ready to perform the test, he or she simply activates the sensors. In order to protect the privacy of the user, the results are only presented on the inside of the mask.
