The city revealed its plans Thursday on how it will create 50 individual modular housing units for people experiencing homeless on city property along Wolfe Street near the city’s emergency overflow shelter.
Construction of the temporary modular homes — which the city is calling “modular bridge housing” — will begin next month, the city announced Thursday.
The units are designed to provide those experiencing homelessness with an intermediary home while they are assisted with finding more permanent housing, according to the city.
“I’m proud of the progress we’ve made towards the plan at Wolfe Street,” stated Town Ward Coun. Alex Bierk, city council’s vice-chair of housing and homelessness, in a press release.
“I think it’s a significant step in the right direction to address the needs of the community, and establish structure and support in the area.”
For months, homeless people who either don’t want to use the city’s shelters or are barred from using them have been living out of tents in an encampment along Wolfe Street and the Rehill parking lot.
Outreach workers have shown pictures of the layout for the individual housing units to them and discussed how the housing community will operate.
