Port of Montreal opens its new overpass in the Viau sector

The Port of Montreal has officially inaugurated its newly constructed overpass over Notre-Dame Street East, situated in the Viau sector. The objective of this project, initiated two years ago, is to reduce the load on the local road network by diverting around 1,500 trucks daily. This new infrastructure will optimize the efficiency and flow of freight transportation.

Facilitating a direct link between bulk and container terminals, the overpass established by the Montreal Port Authority (MPA) will allow departing trucks from the Port of Montreal to access Highway 25 via Dickson Street and Souligny Avenue, thereby circumventing Notre-Dame Street. This modification is projected to ease travel for truck drivers, enhance the fluidity of goods transport, and bolster port operations efficiency. Importantly, it will also minimize disruptions for residents in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.

During the planning phases, the MPA engaged in comprehensive public consultations to ensure a seamless integration into the urban environment and address community concerns. The overpass features eco-conscious elements like effective rainwater management, recycled glass integration in specific concrete components, and lighting adhering to International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) standards.

David D’Amboise, Vice-President of Asset Management and Port Logistics at the MPA, emphasized that the overpass achieves operational efficiency goals while harmonizing with the local community and urban landscape.

Begun in June 2021, construction of the overpass represents a total investment of $47.8 million.

The project will reach full completion by the end of summer, with architectural integration, landscaped greenery, and an artistic element created in collaboration with the Molinari Foundation. The overpass currently utilizes the Port’s temporary road to Dickson Street, which will be removed upon the completion of Assomption Boulevard and Souligny Avenue extensions by the City of Montreal and the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, respectively.
