New report looks at the big promise of small homes

Ever wondered if tiny homes can help with housing affordability? We’ve done the research.

Tiny Homes – An Alternative to Conventional Housing is a new report from the Research Centre. It looks at whether this form of housing could work in B.C.

Tiny houses are permanent, ground-oriented dwellings that are detached, moveable, non-motorized, under 500 square feet, and tailored to a compact design. Such homes, the research finds, are well suited for people from many walks of life. As well as being a more environmentally friendly housing option, tiny homes can also be deployed quickly in response to natural disasters.

“This research could make it easier for government, industry, future homeowners, and the public to better understand this form of housing,” said Stephanie Allen, Acting Chief Research Officer and Associate VP, Strategic Business Operations and Performance. “The report includes lessons learned elsewhere. It also looks at their potential, possible impacts, and the barriers to implementing tiny homes in our province.”

Tiny Homes – An Alternative to Conventional Housing investigates if such houses can be built in neighbourhoods throughout British Columbia, as well as what demographic is most attracted to the tiny home lifestyle. It includes findings and recommendations for planning regulations, warranty provisions, and cultural aspects for implementing tiny houses into new or established neighbourhoods.

Affordable housing is a concern across British Columbia and there is an urgent need to increase options. Several jurisdictions in North America are exploring the construction of tiny houses as an option to increase the available housing stock.

The report features local and international cases studies. Interviews with industry experts are also included.
