Vortex ‘wildlife-safe’ bladeless turbines harness renewable, clean energy

A leap towards development accounts for sacrifices. The moment we have moved towards the agricultural age, we have transformed wildlife fields into arable lots to provide us food for our daily sustenance.

An energy company from Spain has an out-of-box solution by reinventing the traditional windmills as we see them – towering vertical machines with long blades that can pose as threats to birds and local wildlife.

“Not only is it very cheap to make, oil-less and low-maintenance, tests suggest each structure will last longer than 15 or 20 years, all of which I think is a very useful contribution to the fight against climate change,” says David J Yanez, Vortex c-founder and inventor.

“It’s also silent and does far less damage to birds than normal wind turbines,” adds Yanez.

Aside from its wild-life safe design, its Vortex technology uses no blades, getting energy from wind through oscillation without gears, brakes nor oil. Its design makes it a nice alternative for a greener on-site generation.

The inventor’s eureka moment came about watching a bridge disaster. “When I was a student at University, I had this idea of a wind turbine without rotation nor gears or shafts while watching the famous video of Tacoma Narrow’s bridge collapse. I kept that idea in a drawer for years until one day, when I felt it was ready to see the light,” Yanez shared in an interview.

The design recently won the approval of Norway’s state energy company, Equinor, which named Vortex on a list of the 10 most exciting startups in the energy sector. Equinor will also offer the startup development support through its tech accelerator program.

About Vortex

Intensive R&D company, founded in 2013 and exclusively dedicated to the development and marketing of devices able to capture the wind kinetic energy by vortex shedding, transforming it into other useful forms of energy. Since September 2012, the development of Vortex project with the sponsorship of the Repsol Foundation. Currently, Vortex team, apart from the founders, is comprised of other engineers as well as reputed external advisors giving technical support to the project, plus a first line Advisory Board and shareholders adding great value to the Company.
