Major Construction Begins on Grimsby GO Station in Ontario

Major construction is moving forward on the new Grimsby GO Station, expanding GO Transit infrastructure in Ontario’s Niagara Region and improving connections along the Lakeshore West line.

The Ontario government has awarded the major construction contract to Kenaidan Murphy Joint Venture, with completion expected in the second half of 2027. The station will be located west of the recently opened Confederation GO Station and is expected to improve transit access between Niagara Region, Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area.

According to the province, the new station could reduce travel time to the nearest GO station by as much as 30 minutes for some area residents while supporting increased GO service along the Lakeshore West corridor.

First GO Station Using New Standardized Design

Grimsby GO Station will be the first station built using Ontario’s new standardized GO station approach, which is intended to reduce construction costs and accelerate project delivery. Metrolinx says the approach is designed to provide a functional customer experience while establishing a model that can be delivered more efficiently on future station projects.

Metrolinx also maintains design and engineering standards governing the planning and construction of GO stations, terminals and facilities across the network.

Early site preparation began earlier in 2026. Current construction activities include site grading, followed by excavation and construction of the platform foundations. Metrolinx construction notices show that site preparation activities have been underway throughout the year.

What Will Be Included at Grimsby GO Station?

The new Grimsby GO Station will include a rail platform with a heated shelter and canopy, along with infrastructure supporting connections between rail, bus, vehicle and bicycle transportation.

Plans call for a five-bay bus loop serving GO and regional transit, approximately 220 parking spaces, bicycle parking and dedicated passenger pick-up and drop-off areas.

The station will add another GO Transit access point in the Niagara-Hamilton corridor following the opening of Confederation GO Station in Hamilton in October 2025.

Supporting GO Expansion Across Ontario

The Grimsby project forms part of Ontario’s broader GO Expansion program. The province says it has invested more than $15 billion in the program to increase service across some of GO Transit’s busiest rail corridors.

Recent investments along the Lakeshore West corridor include Confederation GO Station and upgrades to West Harbour GO Station, while other rail and station projects continue across the network.

For Niagara Region, Grimsby GO Station is intended to strengthen connections with Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area while improving access to employment, businesses and regional transportation networks.

Construction Targeted for Completion in 2027

With the major construction contract now awarded and site work underway, the Grimsby GO Station project is targeting completion during the second half of 2027.

Beyond adding another station to the Lakeshore West line, the project will also serve as an early test of Ontario’s standardized approach to GO station construction. If successfully replicated, the model could influence how future transit stations are designed and delivered across the regional network.
