Gordie Howe International Bridge Set to Transform North American Trade Corridor

The Gordie Howe International Bridge will officially open on July 27, marking a significant milestone for Canada-U.S. trade, transportation, and infrastructure. The opening follows an agreement between the Governments of Canada and Michigan, with support from the United States Government, bringing into service one of North America’s most important new transportation links.

Connecting Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, the bridge will enhance the movement of goods and people across the busiest international land border crossing in North America.

A Major Investment in North American Trade

The Windsor-Detroit corridor facilitates hundreds of millions of dollars in cross-border trade every day, making it a critical gateway for manufacturing, automotive production, agriculture, and commercial transportation.

The new bridge is expected to strengthen North American supply chains, improve border efficiency, and generate billions of dollars in economic activity over the coming decades. It will also provide additional travel options for commuters, tourists, and commercial carriers while helping reduce congestion at existing crossings.

A Landmark Infrastructure Project

The Gordie Howe International Bridge spans approximately 2.5 kilometres across the Detroit River and features an 853-metre cable-stayed main span—the longest of its kind in North America.

The crossing includes modern ports of entry in both Canada and the United States, equipped with advanced screening technologies and border management systems designed to improve security while accelerating the movement of people and freight.

Supporting Economic Growth

Canada and the United States have also agreed to several cooperative initiatives that will support the long-term success of the crossing. These include transparent toll governance, collaboration on toll adjustments, and the creation of a 15-year economic development fund financed through a portion of bridge operating profits.

The fund will help stimulate economic growth and investment in communities on both sides of the border.

Building a Stronger Future

The opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge represents more than the completion of a major infrastructure project. It strengthens one of the continent’s busiest trade corridors, supports manufacturing and logistics, improves the resilience of cross-border supply chains, and creates new opportunities for businesses, workers, and communities in both Canada and the United States.

After more than a decade of planning, collaboration, and construction, the bridge stands as a landmark example of international cooperation and a vital investment in the future of North American transportation and economic growth.
