Built Green Canada Announces 2026 Maverick Award Winners in Sustainable Construction

Built Green Canada, alongside title sponsors Jayman BUILT and SkyFire Energy, has announced the winners of its annual Maverick Awards—recognizing leadership and innovation in sustainable residential construction across Canada. The awards highlight excellence in three categories: Ambassadorship, Innovation, and Transformation, with submissions spanning British Columbia to Ontario.

In the Ambassador Maverick category, a rare tie was awarded to Alberta-based builders Effect Home Builders and Excel Homes. Effect Home Builders has distinguished itself through early adoption of sustainable building practices, actively sharing knowledge through mentorship, industry engagement, and education. Excel Homes, one of the founding Built Green builders, has achieved over 7,000 home certifications and continues to influence industry standards through long-term commitment to sustainability and collaboration.

The Innovation Maverick Award was presented to Vancouver-based Carbon Wise, a women-led organization driving progress in decarbonization within the built environment. Through research, case studies, and policy collaboration, Carbon Wise is helping shape sustainable construction practices while supporting BUILT GREEN® initiatives.

The Transformational Maverick Award was awarded to Best Builders for its Phoenix House project in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Following a devastating fire, the project was rebuilt into a high-performance, low-carbon home. It is recognized as Canada’s first Zero Carbon certified, BUILT GREEN® Net Zero Energy Ready+ home, setting a new benchmark for sustainable renovation and resilience in residential construction.

Built Green Canada continues to play a critical role in advancing sustainable building practices through voluntary certification programs that exceed standard building codes. Founded over 20 years ago, the organization collaborates with industry leaders, government agencies, and stakeholders to improve energy efficiency and environmental performance across multiple areas of residential construction.

Rather than hosting a traditional awards gala, Built Green Canada invests in a year-long marketing and communications campaign to promote the achievements of Maverick Award winners, further amplifying their impact across the industry.

The Maverick Awards are judged by a panel of industry experts, ensuring diverse perspectives and rigorous evaluation. These awards reinforce Built Green Canada’s mission to recognize and accelerate sustainability leadership in the built environment.
