Modern Methods of Construction Education Platform Bridges Skills Gap in Canada’s Building Sector

The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) has launched a groundbreaking national platform—Modern Methods of Construction Education (MMC Edu)—to reshape construction training in Canada. Developed through the Mass Timber Training Network: Advancing Trades for a Sustainable Future (MTAT) project, MMC Edu brings together industry, educators, and institutions to address urgent skills gaps in modern, sustainable building practices.

Backed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and the Green Construction Through Wood (GC Wood) program, MMC Edu supports the advancement of mass timber and off-site construction as key strategies for innovation and low-carbon building.

What MMC Edu Offers

The MMC Edu platform acts as a national hub connecting trades professionals, educators, and industry leaders. Key features include:

  • A growing list of training opportunities
  • A national curriculum framework for integrating mass timber and off-site construction into trades programs
  • Faculty development resources and teaching tools

MMC Edu aims to solve critical industry challenges: labour shortages, lack of standardized training, and limited awareness of off-site construction and prefabrication techniques.

National Collaboration for Skilled Trades

Built on momentum from the MTAT project, MMC Edu reflects a truly collaborative approach. Institutions and stakeholders across Canada have helped define core competencies and education pathways to prepare graduates for a modernized construction sector.

In November 2025, carpentry faculty from across the country attended a hands-on development workshop at BCIT’s Burnaby Campus, engaging in practical installation of mass timber elements. The workshop emphasized real-world skills in moisture management, tolerance, rigging, and preconstruction planning—focusing on bridging classroom learning with industry application.

The National Training Framework

Looking ahead, the MTAT initiative is finalizing a national training framework that will be launched via MMC Edu in March 2026. This framework will guide educational institutions in embedding standardized, yet adaptable, mass timber and off-site construction training into their programs. It ensures relevance to industry needs while supporting regional flexibility.

Institutions and professionals are invited to join the MMC Edu network and subscribe for updates on the upcoming framework release and new learning resources.
