Nine high density certifications awarded by BUILT GREEN®

This quarter saw nine high density projects successfully complete the audit process. These projects met compliance requirements for energy performance in Energy & Envelope, alongside Built Green’s requirements in the other sections of our certification: Materials & Methods, Indoor Air Quality, Ventilation, Waste Management, Water Conservation, and Business Practices.

Congratulations to all our builders—along with their BUILT GREEN® High Density Verifiers, who include: Emma Conway, E3 Eco Group Inc, Erik Heck, Integral Group, Matt Grace, Integral Group, and Roger Chayer, Talus Green Building Consulting.

Maple by Truman Homes 1995 Inc.

Maple offers independent living options for social, active, and healthy seniors. With 11 different floor plans, the one- and two-bedroom homes are complete with full kitchens and private outdoor patio space. Maple offers amenities in partnership with the Brenda Strafford Foundation’s Cambridge Manor.

This BUILT GREEN® Gold certified project brings seniors’ housing options to Calgary’s University District, adding another level of diverse housing opportunities with features like triple-pane windows, WaterSense® fixtures, and Energy Star appliances.

This is Truman Homes’s third BUILT GREEN® certified high density project—with the fourth underway. They have also certified dozens of townhomes through our Single Family (SF) program.

Versant at Stewart Creek by Bow View Homes Ltd.

Near downtown Canmore, Versant is built to complement the surrounding Rocky Mountains and offers 52 chalet and lodge units. Each home is carefully crafted, beginning with high quality products and materials chosen to minimize environmental impact and create energy efficient homes. Whenever possible, these are purchased locally—a Bow View business practice, also encouraged through Built Green’s programs.

With Building E certified last quarter, 10-unit Building D of Versant at Stewart Creek is now also certified BUILT GREEN® Gold! This is their second HD project with Built Green, among many more certified through our SF program.

A Bow View home is built to fit customers’ lifestyles and to be as functional as it is beautiful. They build conventional frame, timber frame, and hybrid timber frame homes.

Marda 34th Avenue by Strategic Group

Six-storey Marda contains 8,900 square feet of retail space and 65 residential suites. It’s the first high-end, boutique rental community in Marda Loop, and as one of the tallest buildings in the area, has great views across Calgary to the peaks of the Rocky Mountains.

Each suite includes luxurious features like waterfall countertops, walk-in steam shower with quartz bases, and Bosch appliances, while Strategic Group remained focused on sustainability, achieving BUILT GREEN® Gold certification.

This is Strategic Group’s second project through the BUILT GREEN® High Density New Construction program, while they have another underway, alongside four more enrolled in the High Density Renovation program in pilot phase.

HI Hostel Jasper by Horizon North Modular Solutions

When Hostelling International (HI) Canada had outgrown their existing Jasper facility and required a new building to be ready for summer, modular construction was chosen to address the project’s two most important needs: timeline certainty and the sustainability of the surrounding environment, while ensuring a high-quality build.

Horizon North Modular Solutions was able to construct the modules off-site, in their temperature-controlled manufacturing facility in Kamloops, allowing HI Canada to open the doors to their new facility 10 months later, a reported time savings of up to 50%.

The HI Jasper Hostel is a 47-room, BUILT GREEN® Silver certified project, and Horizon North Modular Solutions’ first through Built Green Canada. This was an ambitious, well-done project, which required four buildings: for guest accommodations, staff accommodations, and two MURB manager’s suites that went through the Single Family program to receive BUILT GREEN® Gold certification.

White Spruce Lodge by Spring Creek Mountain Village

BUILT GREEN® Gold certified White Spruce Lodge is a 49 unit condo lodge built over four storeys, which melds modern styling and building technology with a more traditional emphasis on timber, glass, and stone—fitting, in its mountain setting. There are a number of beautiful floor plans to choose from, and condo owners are offered the option to have their unit managed by Spring Creek Vacations, simplifying vacation rentals.

Following Spring Creek’s quality construction found in all their condominium projects—White Spruce Lodge is the result of their commitment to sustainability, and offers also high-end features and finishes. They paid special attention to water conservation—beyond water-saving appliances, they opted for permeable paving materials for driveways and walkways, an environmentally sound choice that allows storm water to flow into the ground rather than drain away into storm sewers.

Spring Creek Mountain Village Inc. has completed five BUILT GREEN® HD projects—with two more already under development—and many more certified through our Single Family program.

The Peak by British Pacific Enterprises Ltd.

The Peak at Mulgrave Park is perched on the edge of a 10-acre wooded park on West Vancouver’s mountainside—perfectly situated to take advantage of panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Stanley Park, and the downtown Vancouver skyline. The boutique building’s 14 homes range from 2,340 to 4,164 square feet and feature Bulthaup kitchens, open concept living spaces and expansive terraces. Utilizing hybrid heat pumps, carefully selected building and finishing materials, and high efficiency windows, The Peak was built with sustainability in mind.

While British Pacific Enterprises have certified nearly 100 projects BUILT GREEN®, this is their first through our HD program—going straight to Gold level certification! This project was also the first to be awarded BUILT GREEN® innovation points for how it managed the tremendous onsite and offsite water—more here.

The Manor, Mount Douglas Seniors Housing Society

Located in Saanich, an area where affordable housing is badly needed, BUILT GREEN® Gold certified project, The Manor, offers 36 studios and 48 one-bedroom units, including two with full wheelchair accessibility. The Manor brings a little luxury and sustainability to affordable senior living through the Mount Douglas Senior Housing Society. This Society began over 50 years ago in response to senior housing needs, and has since been creating safe, comfortable homes for independent seniors.

The builder on this project, Città Construction, has had well over 300 projects certified BUILT GREEN® through the Single Family program, and this is their first High Density project with Built Green. They’ve long been focused on sustainability, which started with two projects: a straw bale, solar-assisted house, and a home constructed from reused timber rescued from a hangar that blew down in a storm. Founder, Bill Patterson, is a valued, long-time Director on Built Green Canada’s Board, and is the Board Chair.

OTTO by Casman Properties

BUILT GREEN® Platinum certified OTTO adds 59 sustainably built and verified homes to Saanich. Designed to suit a variety of lifestyles, there are condos, lofts, and town homes to choose from. Features like low-VOC materials, energy- and water-efficient appliances, alongside permeable pavers and natural storm water management systems for biological treatment for rainwater are just the start of sustainable living at OTTO.

It’s designed around a central courtyard for added green space, created to be low-impact and promote a more sustainable lifestyle, including raised bed garden plots for residents! Meanwhile, their underground parking enables green choices, with six electric vehicle-charging stations and shared bike storage.

Starting out in the program with a bang, this is Casman Properties first BUILT GREEN® certified project.

Radius at Royal Oak by Tri-Eagle Development and Jawl Residential

Radius offers Energy Star appliances, Quartz countertops, bike storage, and more—all within Royal Oak neighbourhood to offer West Coast modern rental suites with central access to Saanich’s hub of shopping, transit, and trails.

With 66 units over six storeys, BUILT GREEN® Gold certified Radius at Royal Oak is a wood-frame, multi-family build with concrete underground parking. Designed by de Hoog and Kierulf architects and constructed by Homewood Constructors, the one- and two-bedroom residences are designed to bring the outdoors in, through large windows and balconies, and features robust landscaping with native plants and coniferous trees.
