As Windsor launches its latest road construction season, the city is leveraging smart traffic signal technology to ease congestion and enhance safety near construction zones. The new system dynamically adjusts traffic lights in real time using live data from sensors and traffic cameras, helping traffic flow more efficiently through detour routes and lane closures. This marks a shift from relying on pre-set signal schedules, allowing city staff to respond swiftly to on-the-ground conditions. A key focus area is the intersection of Howard Avenue and Division Road, near Devonshire Mall—Southwest Ontario’s busiest shopping hub—where construction had caused significant delays. Crews have opened an extra southbound lane to ease mall access without disrupting through-traffic. The ongoing infrastructure work, slated to continue through October, includes road widening, storm sewer upgrades, a new railway crossing, improved lighting, and pedestrian-friendly features like sidewalks and multi-use trails. According to David Simpson, Windsor’s commissioner of infrastructure services, the initiative is about balancing necessary upgrades with minimizing traffic disruption, ensuring motorists experience safer and more efficient travel through construction zones.
