Giatec Scientific Blog: From Conferences to Construction Sites in the COVID-19 Times: How Prepared Are You?

If you are in the concrete industry, conferences such as World of Concrete (WOC)ConExpo, and American Concrete Institute’s ACI Concrete Convention make for important dates in your calendar. They certainly are in ours.

The lights and splendor of the Las Vegas WOC 2020 (held February 3-7) etched great memories of Giatec’s bustling booth, buzz around the customer and partner appreciation dinners, and talks with current and future distribution partners. But, we could see hints of what was to come even then and there. You may remember noticing several empty booths, seeing fewer visitors from Asia, and hearing that it was due to the novel coronavirus that reared its ugly head some weeks before.

Then came ConExpo (held also in Las Vegas, March 10-14, 2020) just this past week, that saw touch-and-go changes to its programming that resulted in finishing a day early. Before the week was out, this year’s ACI Concrete Convention (scheduled to happen in Chicago, March 31 – April 2, 2020) was cancelled, as the Governor of Illinois issued a disaster proclamation due to the COVID-19 situation.

But, there was more bad news. The dreaded “R” word came in with a roar the same week. Recession is upon us.

You were looking forward to the spring and the busy construction season, and now this! Whether you are a developer or a general contractor, you will be looking into building your concrete jobs even more cost-effectively. If you can eliminate dependencies on the human factor, anticipating a shrinking workforce, and build faster at the same time, so much the better. And, if your concrete structures are built safer as a result, that would be icing on the cake. This is where Giatec comes in.
