The exterior wall of a triplex in St-Henri, Montreal, collapsed onto an adjacent construction site on Monday afternoon, leaving the building’s interior exposed as if it were a dollhouse. The Montreal fire department responded to the scene on Cazelais St. shortly after 1:30 p.m. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but neighboring buildings were evacuated as a precaution. The collapse occurred next to a large hole dug on an adjacent lot, where a construction permit for a three-storey, five-unit building had been issued just a week earlier. The triplex, built in 1910 and listed for sale at nearly $1.3 million, had recently undergone renovations on two floors. Witnesses, including Lorraine Muller, noted that the collapse happened suddenly, with debris falling into the excavation site. There is speculation that the hole may have been dug too close to the triplex’s foundation, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the wall.
