Standard General Edmonton Becomes First to Offer Environmental Product Declarations for its Asphalt Mixtures

Colas Canada Inc. announces that Standard General Edmonton., a Colas company, is the first Canadian asphalt concrete pavement producer in Western Canada to offer Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its asphalt mixtures. This makes Standard General Edmonton the second company in Canada to offer EPDs for asphalt concrete pavement.

Colas’ support and partnership with WAP Sustainability and, by association, the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) were key in making the NAPA Emerald Eco-Label tool for the development of asphalt mixture EPDs available in Canada. The result of this partnership is the first EPD available from Standard General Edmonton and the multiple EPDs available from Miller Paving Ltd., another Colas company in Ontario.

The Standard General Edmonton Acheson Asphalt Plant has published several EPDs on the NAPA website and other Colas Western
Canada companies expect to add more throughout the west.

EPDs are like the nutrition facts found on food labels, which give a full, impartial, third-party verified report on the environmental, cradle-to-gate impact on the specific product produced at a particular plant. The process used to develop an EPD ensures consistency in data collection, analysis, and reporting, and third-party verification ensures trustworthiness in the information communicated through an EPD.

The purpose of EPDs is twofold: on the one hand, they help decision-makers assess a product from an environmental perspective, allowing them to make informed decisions regarding the impact of that product on a project. On the other hand, the information contained in the EPDs helps asphalt manufacturers benchmark their products and continue to strive to find solutions to reduce their environmental impact.

“We are proud that Standard General Edmonton, a division of Colas Western Canada, is now offering EPDs for the asphalt produced in Acheson, Alberta. We are proud to be the first company in Western Canada to offer EPDs as it aligns with our goal of being the leader in
transportation infrastructure within the communities we operate,” said Shawn Jubinville, President of Colas Western Canada Inc.

“EPDs are important because the data contained helps us and our clients get accurate carbon scores for the Asphalt used during construction and this will help us meet our carbon reduction goals,” said Curtis Martin, Vice President of Standard General Edmonton.
