McGill University announced it must halve its construction and renovation budget following recent changes in provincial government funding mechanisms. The new policy, retroactive to May 1, 2024, imposes a cap on the funding available for capital projects, prompting McGill to suspend all new projects and calls for tender. The university has formed a committee to review ongoing and planned projects, prioritizing those essential for health, safety, and university operations. These changes stem from a March 2021 decision by Quebec’s Minister of Finance to modify the standard for transfer payments, now applied by the Ministry of Higher Education since April 2024.
