In Sandwich Town on Windsor’s west side, construction crews have uncovered historical streetcar rails and ties from the early 1900s, remnants of the Sandwich, Windsor, and Amherstburg Railway Company (SW&A)—Canada’s first electric streetcar system. The discovery has sparked excitement among locals, including Sandwich Town BIA Director Stephen Hargreaves, who plans to integrate some of these artifacts into the new crosswalks as a nod to the area’s rich history. The ongoing reconstruction of Sandwich Street is part of the Gordie Howe International Bridge Project and includes multiple phases, each focusing on improving infrastructure while preserving the historical essence of the neighborhood. Local businesses remain open and optimistic about the future, as the upgrades are expected to boost traffic and commerce once completed. Residents like local librarian Mary-Lou Gilson are thrilled about the blend of modern development and historical discovery, seeing it as an opportunity to learn more about the town’s prosperous past and share it with the next generation. The entire reconstruction project, which began in September 2023, is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, bringing new life to one of Canada’s most historic neighborhoods.
