The Government of Saskatchewan has announced a significant milestone in the ongoing Highway 5 improvement project in the St. Denis area. With a budget of $40 million, the project has now reached its midway point, marking substantial progress in one of the province’s most crucial infrastructure upgrades. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance traffic safety and expand the transportation network in the rapidly growing corridor between Humboldt and Saskatoon.
Since construction began in June 2023, the Highway 5 project has focused on upgrading a 15 km segment in the St. Denis area. Key improvements include shoulder widening, resurfacing, and the addition of a set of passing lanes, all aimed at boosting road safety and traffic flow. Additionally, the project involves the realignment of Range Road 314 and the St. Denis access road to improve sightlines and safety for motorists turning on and off Highway 5.
The project is scheduled for completion by the summer of 2025, with substantial work already completed, including the construction of two sets of passing lanes in 2018 between Humboldt and Highway 2. In 2021, further enhancements were made, such as resurfacing, shoulder widening, and sightline improvements between the junctions of Highways 316 and 671. Most recently, a 15 km section of Highway 5 west of Highway 2 was upgraded in 2023, including another set of passing lanes.
Looking ahead, the project plans to twin and resurface an additional 10 km segment of Highway 5, extending from Saskatoon to 1.6 km east of the Highway 316 junction. Construction on this final phase is expected to begin as early as 2025, further enhancing the corridor’s safety and capacity.
The Highway 5 project is part of the Saskatchewan government’s broader commitment to improving the province’s transportation infrastructure. Since 2008, the government has invested over $13 billion in transportation, upgrading more than 20,700 kilometers of highways across the province.
Highways Minister Lori Carr expressed the government’s dedication to these improvements, stating, “Our government is committed to improving traffic safety and enhancing our transportation network in one of Saskatchewan’s fastest growing regions. I look forward to the completion of this project as we continue growing our strong and vibrant communities across the province.”
As Saskatchewan continues to experience growth, these infrastructure improvements are vital to ensuring the safety and efficiency of the province’s transportation network. The Highway 5 project not only enhances current traffic conditions but also lays the foundation for future development and expansion in this key region.
