Three years after a devastating fire reduced Lytton, B.C., to ash, the community remains largely displaced despite over $239 million in committed funding. Only five homes are near completion, and about 15 building permits have been approved. The fire caused over $102 million in insured damage, with significant contributions from the Insurance Bureau of Canada and Canadian Pacific Kansas City railway. Many residents, including elders George and Sharon Brown, are still waiting to return home, facing delays attributed to extensive archaeological assessments and updated provincial building codes. Lytton’s Mayor Denise O’Connor highlights the need for better organizational support and criticizes the slow recovery pace. The B.C. Auditor General is investigating the expenditure of more than $41 million in provincial recovery funds. The Browns, along with other residents, continue to hope for Lytton’s revival as construction on their new home is anticipated to begin by fall.
