Urban downtowns, often known as concrete jungles, might see a shift towards mass timber construction. Mass timber, made by layering wood, offers a less carbon-intensive alternative to concrete and steel, making it faster and easier to build with. Although it currently represents only 1% of construction materials, demand is growing. New building codes and federal programs are supporting taller mass timber buildings. However, challenges remain, including insurance costs, supply-demand mismatches, and environmental concerns about increased logging.
