Brampton council is addressing the issue of unlicensed and unscrupulous contractors exploiting residents by considering a city-led licensing program. Prompted by a delegation from the Ontario Contractors Association, which represents 200 contractors, the proposal aims to protect residents from substandard work by enforcing contractor licensing, similar to the city’s Residential Rental Licensing (RRL) program. The initiative received unanimous support from council members, who tasked staff with developing recommendations. Council members acknowledged past challenges with licensing programs but expressed optimism about creating effective regulations. The planning commissioner welcomed the proposal, emphasizing its timeliness alongside other licensing efforts.
